From my experience today!

First they said my card is not being authorized

then they said card is being declined for the amount they are trying to charge

I called NBK…they said “NO IDEA” …everything looks fine for them and I have more than enough credit limit and no pending charges.

My experience : - plastics are good (only if they work)

I am going to deal with this tomorrow as I am very tired today…

Vista ServicePack 1 Beta

Today Morning I installed the very latest build of SP1 beta over my vista installation which I managed to get from Microsoft through my colleagues who visited the lead managers in Microsoft couple days back. There are hundreds of fixes and updates and due to this, the file size is pretty big….its around 700 MB ( XP Sp2 was 270 MB??) and it took around 1 hour and 15 minutes to finish the installation…My first impression is that this service pack has did something magical as I can clearly see great improvements in the way the system responds…..later in the day I noticed some issues (nothing serious though) which I hope are particular to specific scenario, which my colleagues also share and we are planning to take it back to Microsoft after running some more tests. Those who are planning to deploy vista in an enterprise, I recommend waiting till 1st quarter 08 to cook a desktop image that is going to include sp1 rather than staging it afterwards as the impact on big environments is going be huge.

While landing at Heathrow, I managed to snap a Kuwait Airways flight taking off!

My friend Andrew was waiting for me at the airport. We went straight to our office(20 mts drive) as we had lots of things to discuss and finalize before the meetings. Andy knows all the shortcuts and it was fun to drive around with him in London…especially on a Sunday! During the break, he took me to his home and I met his big family! his parents, wife, kids and his brother’s family! My late lunch was with them and I really enjoyed their company. We went back to office and on our way we picked another colleague, Jim…who is going to be of great resource and help for the next couple days! We managed to complete lots of pending stuff and decided to have a quick look tomorrow morning for any final amendments. I then went to the nearby tube station to top-up my oyster card as I had trouble recharging it online through the website…

Check in to the hotel was a breeze…Andrew had it all arranged for me prior to my arrival and I was able to get into the room within 5 minutes!! I am staying at “_____” hotel in Mayfair and I love this hotel and the neighborhood…its a great place! They gave me a free upgrade(thanks again to Andrew) and me gets the spacious suite! Its probably because our company gives them lots of business, they are giving us this sort of upgrade! As usual, things are horribly expensive…So I got some items from the nearby store…

Earlier I promised couple other friends that I will join them this evening at a pub nearby…I postponed it to someone other time coz after the journey and work I am really bushed…I am going to hit the sack early as I have to get up early in the morning and head to the office.

Oh My Data!

Few weeks back when I hooked my old external hard drive ( 120 GB Maxtor HD in a cheap enclosure - USB) the system recognized the drive and mounted it. But, I couldn’t read any files off it and the drive was making some ticking sound. I turned off the drive immediately… and after a few mins, I brought it online again and I was able to access my data this time. But the ticking sounds were bothering as they are an indication of an imminent disk failure. I have a recent backup on to the tapes so, I am not very worried about the data . I decided to go ahead for a Seagate Free Agent Pro - 500 GB - USB/e-SATA drive and hopefully I will be taking delivery of it today. I wanted to get a NAS drive with RAID, but they are still expensive and decided not to go for one now. Seagate external drives are covered under a 5 years warranty….though I wonder what will be the use of a 500 GB drive in the year 2012!

Tylenol PM no longer works on me. I took 3 geltabs ( 2 is the prescribed dosage) last night to get a goodnight sleep and for some relief from body pain….but it didn’t work.

NBK is now offering Visa Gift Cards, similar to the Burgan Bank’s Bee-wallet. They are charging KWD 1 only as the service fees (for e.g: 51 KWD for a 50 KWD Gift Card). Cards are not re-loadable and cannot be used for internet purchases (Per Hala Watani CSR)

Cards can be purchased from any NBK branch.

24-Year-old Man Marries 82-Year-Old Bride! Give me a Break!

A 24-year-old Argentine man has married a woman 58 years his senior.

The groom, Reinaldo Waveqche, told reporters after the ceremony in Santa Fe, northern Argentina: “I’ve always liked mature ladies.”

Mr Waveqche added: “I don’t care what other people say.” He and bride Adelfa Volpes, 82, are planning to travel to Rio de Janeiro for their honeymoon.

Asked if the marriage was purely spiritual, Ms Volpes laughed and replied: “There is going to be more.” - HUH?

The couple were married in a civil service after several years of engagement, and later walked through a local church surrounded by reporters.

Their love blossomed when Mr Waveqche went to live with her after his mother’s death when he was 15.

He said he admired his new wife’s zest for life, and emphasised how special she was to him.

Probably the cheapest external storage device, given the 500 GB capacity and a price tag $125.99……and the colour is no-nonsense black!

UPDATE : This drive was on sale and now it is back to its 145.99 price tag, making it not the cheapest one. Bestbuy is now offering Seagate - FreeAgent Pro 500GB for 119.99 & 134.99(includes eSATA interface). Seagate is offering 5 year warranty and thats the main attraction!

Test run of stock trains for the Dubai Metro Rail project are going to be conducted soon in Japan. They plan to have the first phase completed by 2008! It will be a fully automated driver less system. On completion, it will be the longest fully automated metro system in the world. Here in Kuwait, we are still debating the need for one? I am really clueless why Ministry of “Communication” is involved in a metro rail project.!!! by the way, any news about the silk city..a.k.a Madinat Al-Hareer project?

Oh my Lord! Every thing goes online….including fish! . This site offers cash on delivery fish purchase! It claims to be the biggest market in q8! whot? yeah…they are starting with fish, but soon will be offering Electronics, Computers, Mobiles, Home Appliaces, Swarovski Crystals, Air tickets etc! By the way no credit card, K-net option yet for online purchases. They list “No credit card required” as a feature though!

Map24.com is undoubtedly the best resource for road maps in the middle east. They improved their website recently and as a result, it is less buggy. Recently they released the desktop and mobile edition of the maps, which still requires a live connection to their servers over the net, but offers a reliable solution to pull out maps which I feel a little faster than the online version(using browser). I use map24 extensively and most of the times, I get what I am looking for. Baladia’s Maps are also useful at times, but map24 is constantly improving and they have mapped pretty much whole kuwait + have more number of POIs compared to Garmin Mapsource - Middle East and other on board navigation softwares. Map 24 desktop software is only available for Windows platform, but the mobile edition is available for a wide range of phones / PDAs running windows mobile (i-mate, HTC etc) as well as symbian OS (Nokia, few siemens and samsung models)
